Today we celebrate the birth of the United States, through the creation and acceptance of the Declaration of Independence. To most people this seems to only mean that they have another opportunity to take a day off of work, Have some watermelon and corn, and shoot off some fireworks. People have forgotten what this day means to the world. This is not just another holiday. This is a celebration of the belief and practice that individuals have the right and ability to govern themselves. This concept was not a new one, it had been written and talked about for many since the beginning of political philosophy in one form or another.
This philosophy was never embodied in a form so complete and pure as it was with the creation of the Declaration of Independence. Then never so completely protected as it was through it’s companion document The Constitution of the United States. This is what we are celebrating on this day. That the sovereign power of government is derived wholly from the people.
Because of this document more freedom and prosperity has been realized on the world scene then ever had been experienced in all the time and ages of recorded history previous to it’s signing. This document has literally changed the world.
So when we celebrate independence day, let’s remember what that really commemorates and seek to have it represented in the way that we live our lives on a daily basis.
